MHT stands for Menopausal hormone therapy, an obstetrics & gynecology abbreviation.
Preferred modern term for estrogen therapy, with or without a progestogen, used to treat menopause symptoms. It is the most effective treatment for hot flashes and night sweats and also prevents osteoporosis.
Example: MHT reviewed: within 10 years of menopause, no contraindications; benefits outweigh risks.
Usage notes
The Menopause Society (formerly the North American Menopause Society, renamed in 2023) uses MHT in its position statements. The term avoids implying that menopause is a deficiency that must be "replaced". Transdermal estrogen carries a lower clot risk than oral estrogen. Low-dose vaginal estrogen for local symptoms is considered separately.
