1. Motor vehicle accident
Medical · Emergency Medicine Abbreviations · also used in government and law
Older and still common term for a crash involving motor vehicles, used in emergency, insurance and police records. Details such as speed, restraint use and vehicle damage are documented in the same way as for MVC.
Example: Pt involved in MVA this morning, now with L wrist pain and swelling.
Safety advocates and the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration moved away from "accident" in the late 1990s, arguing that crashes are predictable and preventable. MVC is now preferred in many medical journals. In insurance and legal settings MVA remains standard.
2. Manual vacuum aspiration
Medical · Obstetrics & Gynecology Abbreviations
Office-based procedure that uses a handheld syringe to create suction and empty the uterus in early pregnancy, usually up to about 12 weeks, for miscarriage management or abortion care. It requires no electricity and only local anesthesia.
Example: Incomplete early pregnancy loss at 7 weeks; MVA in clinic with paracervical block.
The WHO recommends vacuum aspiration over sharp curettage. Because it is inexpensive and portable, MVA is widely used in low-resource settings. In emergency medicine MVA almost always means motor vehicle accident, so gynecology notes usually spell it out.
3. Motor Vehicle Administration
Transportation & Travel · Driving Abbreviations
Maryland's motor vehicle agency, part of the state Department of Transportation, which handles driver licensing, vehicle titling and registration and emissions testing oversight.
Example: The MVA mailed my new license within ten days of the online renewal.
Maryland's agency is formally the MDOT MVA. The abbreviation is easily confused with MVA in the sense of motor vehicle accident, which appears in police reports and insurance claims. Maryland's vehicle emissions inspection program operates under the MVA.
