1. Mental status examination

Medical · Mental Health & Psychiatry Abbreviations

Structured description of a patient's current psychological state, the psychiatric counterpart of the physical exam. It covers appearance, behavior, speech, mood and affect, thought process and content, perceptions, cognition, insight and judgment.

Example: MSE: disheveled, psychomotor slowing, mood "empty", affect constricted, no SI, insight fair.

The MSE records what is observed during the interview, while history covers what happened before. Mood is usually quoted in the patient's own words, and affect is the clinician's observation. Cognitive screening tools may be added. Also called the mental state examination in British usage.

2. Mean squared error

Units & Measurements · Statistics Abbreviations · also used in technology

The average of squared differences between predictions and actual values, a standard loss function in regression and machine learning. For an estimator, MSE equals its variance plus its squared bias.

Example: The random forest achieved a test MSE of 4.2, lower than linear regression's 6.8.

Squaring penalizes large errors heavily, so MSE is sensitive to outliers. The decomposition into bias and variance underlies the bias-variance tradeoff in model building. In ANOVA output, MSE is the mean square for error, SSE divided by its degrees of freedom. Its square root, RMSE, is in the original units.

3. Medical screening examination

Medical · Emergency Medicine Abbreviations

Evaluation required by EMTALA to determine whether a person who comes to an emergency department has an emergency medical condition. It must be performed by qualified staff before asking about payment.

Example: MSE by ED physician: no emergency condition, referred to clinic.

The hospital's bylaws define who may perform an MSE, such as physicians, NPs or PAs. Triage alone does not count as an MSE. In psychiatry MSE means mental status examination, a structured description of mental state.
