MOUD stands for Medications for opioid use disorder, a mental health & psychiatry abbreviation.
Methadone, buprenorphine and extended-release naltrexone, the FDA-approved drugs that reduce opioid craving, withdrawal, overdose and death. Federal agencies now prefer this term because medication is itself treatment, not just an aid to other therapy.
Example: Jail-based MOUD program continues buprenorphine for incarcerated patients with OUD.
Usage notes
MOUD gradually replaced "medication-assisted treatment" (MAT) in SAMHSA and NIDA materials. Methadone for OUD can be dispensed only through certified opioid treatment programs, while buprenorphine can be prescribed in offices and by telehealth. Staying on medication long term is associated with the best outcomes.
