OUD stands for Opioid use disorder, a mental health & psychiatry abbreviation.
Substance use disorder involving compulsive opioid use despite harm, including prescription opioids, heroin and illicitly manufactured fentanyl. Medications for OUD (methadone, buprenorphine and extended-release naltrexone) roughly halve the risk of death.
Example: OUD, severe, injecting fentanyl; start buprenorphine-naloxone today, naloxone kit dispensed.
Usage notes
In January 2023 the US eliminated the special DEA "X-waiver" requirement, allowing any clinician with standard DEA registration to prescribe buprenorphine for OUD. Naloxone nasal spray became available over the counter in 2023. US opioid overdose deaths peaked around 2022–2023 before declining. Fentanyl test strips and syringe services are harm-reduction measures.
