DEA stands for Drug Enforcement Administration, a US federal agency abbreviation.

Enforces federal drug laws, targets trafficking organizations and regulates the legitimate supply chain of controlled substances for the Justice Department. Doctors, pharmacies and manufacturers need a DEA registration to prescribe or handle scheduled drugs.

Example: The pharmacy rejected the prescription because the doctor's DEA number was missing.

Usage notes

Formed in July 1973 by merging the Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs with other drug enforcement units, it is headed by an Administrator. The DEA and HHS share responsibility for scheduling drugs under the Controlled Substances Act. A prescriber's DEA number is a two-letter, seven-digit registration that pharmacists check on controlled-substance prescriptions.
