Initiative created by executive order on January 20, 2025 to cut federal spending, staffing and regulations and modernize government technology. Despite its name it is not a cabinet department; it operates through the renamed U.S. DOGE Service and teams placed inside agencies.
Example: The agency canceled dozens of contracts that DOGE had flagged as wasteful.
The order renamed the U.S. Digital Service, founded in 2014, as the United States DOGE Service and set up a temporary DOGE organization scheduled to end on July 4, 2026. Businessman Elon Musk was its best-known figure until he stepped back in May 2025. The name echoes "Doge", an internet meme linked to the Dogecoin cryptocurrency.

A cryptocurrency created in December 2013 by Billy Markus and Jackson Palmer as a joke based on the Shiba Inu "Doge" meme, which became one of the largest coins thanks to its online community and celebrity endorsements.

Dogecoin has no supply cap and issues about 5 billion new coins a year, making it inflationary. Elon Musk's frequent posts about it drove large price swings from 2021, including around his "Saturday Night Live" appearance. In US government news from 2025, DOGE also refers to the Department of Government Efficiency.
