EIP stands for Ethereum Improvement Proposal, a cryptocurrency & blockchain abbreviation.
A design document proposing a change to Ethereum's protocol, client software or standards, debated publicly and adopted through network upgrades. Token standards such as ERC-20 begin as EIPs.
Example: EIP-1559 changed how fees work by burning a base fee on every transaction.
Usage notes
Modeled on Bitcoin Improvement Proposals and Python's PEPs. ERCs, Ethereum Requests for Comments, are the application-level subset covering interfaces such as tokens. EIP-1559, activated in the London upgrade of August 2021, made ether's supply partly deflationary.
