ERC-721 stands for Ethereum Request for Comments 721, a cryptocurrency & blockchain abbreviation.
The Ethereum standard for non-fungible tokens, in which each token has a unique ID and can represent a distinct item such as artwork, a game asset or a domain name. Most NFT marketplaces support it.
Example: Each concert ticket is an ERC-721 token, so it can be resold but not duplicated.
Usage notes
Written by William Entriken, Dieter Shirley, Jacob Evans and Nastassia Sachs and finalized in 2018, inspired by the CryptoKitties game. ERC-1155 later let one contract manage both fungible and non-fungible tokens efficiently. Ownership records sit on-chain, but the images usually live elsewhere.
