1. Ensign

Military · US Navy and Coast Guard Rank Abbreviations

Lowest commissioned officer rank in the US Navy and Coast Guard, pay grade O-1, worn as a gold bar or a single half-inch gold sleeve stripe. Ensigns come from the Naval Academy, NROTC and Officer Candidate School and usually begin as division officers or in flight school.

Example: ENS Carter qualified as officer of the deck within a year of reporting aboard.

The title comes from the ensign, or flag, once carried by the most junior officer. The US Navy adopted the rank in 1862. Promotion to lieutenant junior grade typically follows two years later. In AP style it is written Ensign in full before a name.

2. Ethereum Name Service

A naming system on Ethereum that maps human-readable names ending in .eth, such as alice.eth, to wallet addresses, content hashes and other records, much as DNS maps domain names to IP addresses.

Example: Send it to my ENS name, maya.eth, instead of the long hex address.

Launched in May 2017 and governed since 2021 by a DAO that issued the ENS token. Names are NFTs that can be traded, and holders pay annual renewal fees. Wallets and some browsers resolve the names automatically.
