DPoS stands for Delegated proof of stake, a cryptocurrency & blockchain abbreviation.
A variant of proof of stake in which coin holders vote for a small number of delegates, or block producers, who validate transactions on their behalf. It enables fast block times at the cost of more centralization.
Example: Token holders re-elected all 21 DPoS block producers in this week's vote.
Usage notes
Designed by Daniel Larimer around 2014 for BitShares and later used in Steem and EOS. Critics note that a handful of large holders and exchanges can dominate voting. The small elected validator set makes it faster than open proof-of-stake systems.
