1. Digital Object Identifier

Writing & Everyday · Citation and Bibliography Abbreviations · also used in entertainment

A permanent identifier assigned to a journal article, book chapter, dataset or other digital object, allowing it to be found even if its web address changes. APA and other styles require DOIs in references when available.

Example: Smith, J. (2020). Sleep and memory. Journal of Cognition, 4(2), 15-29. https://doi.org/10.1234/joc.2020.015

Every DOI begins with the prefix 10., followed by a registrant code, a slash and a suffix. The system is managed by the International DOI Foundation, founded in 1998, and Crossref is the largest registration agency for scholarly content. APA 7 formats DOIs as links beginning https://doi.org/, which keep working when a publisher reorganizes its website.
