1. Enlarged
Writing & Everyday · Citation and Bibliography Abbreviations
Describes an enlarged edition, one with substantial new material added, often combined as "rev. and enl. ed." It appears in citations, catalogs and title pages.
Example: Kuhn, Thomas S. The Structure of Scientific Revolutions. 2nd ed., enl. Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 1970.
Enlarged editions often keep the original text and add chapters, appendices or a postscript, as in Kuhn's 1970 edition, which answered critics in a new postscript. Because page numbers may shift, citations should name the edition consulted. Photographers use "enl." for an enlargement.
2. English as a New Language (ENL)
Education & Academia · K-12 Education Abbreviations
New York State's official term for English instruction for English language learners, replacing ESL under 2015 regulations known as Part 154. ENL can be delivered as standalone classes or integrated into content-area classes.
Example: Under Part 154, beginning students receive both standalone and integrated ENL each week.
New York also uses "ELL" and "MLL" (multilingual learner) in state documents. The amount of required ENL time depends on a student's proficiency level on the NYSESLAT. Teachers need ESOL certification to deliver ENL.
