ELA stands for English language arts, a K-12 education abbreviation.
School subject covering reading, writing, speaking, listening and language conventions such as grammar and vocabulary. US state standards, report cards and tests in kindergarten through grade 12 use ELA as the name for the English curriculum.
Example: Our ELA block runs 90 minutes and includes independent reading time.
Usage notes
The Common Core standards are formally the "Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts & Literacy in History/Social Studies, Science, and Technical Subjects". In high school the course itself is usually titled English 9, 10 and so on. State tests report ELA and math scores side by side.
