1. English language development

Education & Academia · K-12 Education Abbreviations

Instruction specifically designed to develop English learners' listening, speaking, reading and writing in English, often delivered in a daily dedicated block. California's ELD standards distinguish designated ELD time from integrated ELD in content classes.

Example: Designated ELD happens every day from 9:00 to 9:30 in third grade.

ELD focuses on language itself, while sheltered instruction makes grade-level content accessible. WIDA's ELD Standards Framework, updated in 2020, is used by more than 40 states. Teachers group students by proficiency level for designated ELD.

2. Electronic logging device

Transportation & Travel · Driving Abbreviations

Device connected to a commercial truck's engine that automatically records driving time and engine hours to enforce hours-of-service rules. US federal rules have required ELDs for most interstate truck drivers since December 2017.

Example: The ELD shows I have 45 minutes of drive time left, so I'm stopping at the next truck stop.

ELDs replaced paper logbooks, which were easy to falsify. Older automatic onboard recording devices were allowed until December 2019. Exemptions include short-haul drivers and trucks built before 2000. Drivers have criticized the inflexibility of the system when traffic or shipper delays eat into their time.
