1. Spain
Geography & Places · Country Code Abbreviations
Spain's code comes from España, which is why it is ES rather than SP. Madrid is the capital, alpha-3 is ESP, and Spanish locale tags read es-ES, while Spanish in Mexico is es-MX.
Example: Spanish IBANs start with ES and contain 24 characters.
The vehicle sign for Spain is E. El Salvador is SV, not ES. The language code es covers Spanish everywhere, so es-419 is used for Latin American Spanish in software.
2. Extra strength
Medical · Pharmacy Abbreviations
Consumer-label suffix for a higher-strength version of an over-the-counter product, such as Tylenol Extra Strength (500 mg acetaminophen per tablet versus 325 mg for Regular Strength).
Example: Tylenol ES 2 caplets q6h PRN, max 6 caplets per day per label.
The label maximum for Tylenol Extra Strength is 3,000 mg per day under the manufacturer's 2011 voluntary change, lower than the long-standing 4,000 mg ceiling. In prescription products, ES appears in names such as Augmentin ES-600, a high-dose pediatric suspension.
3. Elementary school
Education & Academia · K-12 Education Abbreviations
School serving the youngest grades, usually kindergarten through 5th grade, though some include 6th grade or prekindergarten. Districts use the abbreviation in school names, calendars and bus schedules.
Example: Lincoln ES will dismiss two hours early on Friday for teacher planning.
Also called primary school or grade school. In Britain, primary school covers Reception through Year 6. The abbreviation also appears in district codes, such as "Lincoln ES" versus "Lincoln MS".
4. Even strength
Sports · Ice Hockey Abbreviations
Game situation in which both teams have the same number of skaters, usually five-on-five. Most goals and most analytics are measured at even strength.
Example: He has 18 ES goals, more than any other defenseman this season.
Also written EV in some statistics tables. Five-on-five play makes up roughly three-quarters of game time. Three-on-three overtime and four-on-four play after coincidental penalties are also even strength.
5. Einsteinium (Es)
Science & Engineering · Chemical Element Abbreviations
Einsteinium (element 99) was first found in the radioactive debris of "Ivy Mike," the first full-scale hydrogen bomb test, at Enewetak Atoll in November 1952. It has no practical use; only tiny amounts have ever been made, chiefly as targets for producing heavier elements.
Example: In 2021 researchers characterized a 200-nanogram sample of Es-254, measuring its bond length for the first time.
A team led by Albert Ghiorso identified einsteinium, together with fermium, in filter papers and coral from the test site, and the findings stayed classified until 1955. The element honors Albert Einstein, who died that year. Einsteinium-253 was used in 1955 to make mendelevium, one atom at a time.
