1. High blood pressure

Medical · Cardiology Abbreviations

Plain-language term for hypertension used in public-health campaigns, patient handouts and surveys. In the United States a reading is considered high at 130/80 mmHg or above on repeated measurements, while 120 to 129 systolic with diastolic below 80 counts as elevated.

Example: The pharmacy kiosk said my HBP was back, so I'm logging readings at home for two weeks.

The American Heart Association and CDC favor "high blood pressure" in consumer materials because "hypertension" is sometimes misread as being tense or anxious. Home and ambulatory monitoring help identify white-coat hypertension (high only in the clinic) and masked hypertension (normal in clinic, high elsewhere). Clinical notes use HTN far more often than HBP.

2. Hit by pitch

Sports · Baseball Abbreviations

Event in which a pitch strikes the batter, who is awarded first base unless he swung or made no attempt to avoid the ball. HBP counts toward on-base percentage but not batting average.

Example: Two HBP in the same inning emptied both benches.

Hughie Jennings holds the career record (287), and Craig Biggio leads the modern era with 285. Ray Chapman, killed by a pitch in 1920, is the only major leaguer to die from being hit; batting helmets became mandatory decades later. Also called "plunked" or "beaned".
