1. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy

Medical · Cardiology Abbreviations

Inherited heart muscle disease, usually from sarcomere gene variants, in which the left ventricle thickens without another cause such as hypertension. It affects about 1 in 500 people and is a leading cause of sudden cardiac death in young athletes.

Example: Septal thickness 22 mm with systolic anterior motion of the mitral valve: obstructive HCM.

About two-thirds of patients have obstruction of the left ventricular outflow tract, called HOCM. Treatments include beta-blockers, the cardiac myosin inhibitor mavacamten (FDA-approved in 2022), surgical septal myectomy and alcohol septal ablation. First-degree relatives are screened with ECG, echocardiography and often genetic testing, and high-risk patients receive an ICD.

2. Human capital management

Business & Finance · Human Resources Abbreviations

Approach that treats employees as assets whose skills and engagement can be measured and invested in, and also the name of the software category that bundles HR records, payroll, talent and workforce management, such as Workday HCM and Oracle HCM Cloud.

Example: We're replacing three legacy tools with a single HCM suite.

Interest in measuring human capital grew after the ISO 30414 standard for human capital reporting was published in 2018 and the US Securities and Exchange Commission began requiring human capital disclosures in annual reports in 2020. Vendors use HCM, HRIS and HRMS almost interchangeably.
