FMLA stands for Family and Medical Leave Act, a US law abbreviation also used in business.

Law of 1993 that gives eligible employees up to 12 weeks of unpaid, job-protected leave a year for their own serious health condition, the birth or adoption of a child or care of a seriously ill spouse, child or parent, with continued group health coverage.

Example: She took six weeks of FMLA leave to care for her father after his surgery.

Usage notes

It was the first major bill President Bill Clinton signed, on February 5, 1993. It covers employers with 50 or more employees, and workers qualify after 12 months and 1,250 hours of work. Military caregivers can take up to 26 weeks. Paid leave is not required federally, though a growing number of states have paid family leave programs.
