DUR stands for Drug utilization review, a pharmacy abbreviation.

Structured review of prescribing and dispensing to catch problems such as interactions, duplicate therapy, incorrect doses or allergies. Prospective DUR happens at the pharmacy before dispensing; retrospective DUR analyzes claims afterward.

Example: The DUR alert flagged a duplicate SSRI from two different prescribers.

Usage notes

Also called drug utilization evaluation (DUE) or medication use evaluation (MUE) in hospitals. The Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1990 (OBRA '90) required state Medicaid programs to perform DUR and required pharmacists to offer counseling to Medicaid patients, standards later adopted by most states for all patients.
