1. Director

Business & Finance · Job Title Abbreviations · also used in general use

Shortened form of director seen in org charts, signatures and tables, where a director is a senior manager leading a function or department, typically above manager and below vice president in US companies.

Example: The org chart lists her as Dir. of Finance, reporting directly to the CFO.

Spelled out in formal documents. In UK companies, "director" usually means a member of the board, a legally defined office, whereas in US companies it is often simply a management level. In film credits and reviews, "dir." denotes the director of a film.

2. Direct and indirect remuneration (DIR)

Medical · Pharmacy Abbreviations

Medicare Part D term for price concessions that plans and PBMs receive after a prescription is filled, including fees clawed back from pharmacies weeks or months later based on performance measures.

Example: DIR fees reduced the margin on that claim to below acquisition cost.

Retroactive pharmacy DIR fees grew rapidly in the 2010s and were blamed for closures of independent pharmacies. A CMS rule effective in 2024 requires all pharmacy price concessions to be applied at the point of sale, making the final payment known when the prescription is filled.
