1. Corporate social responsibility
Business & Finance · Management & Strategy Abbreviations
Commitment by a company to operate ethically and contribute to society beyond legal requirements, through activities such as charitable giving, employee volunteering, ethical sourcing and environmental programs. Large firms often publish CSR or sustainability reports describing these efforts.
Example: Our CSR budget funds 40 hours of paid volunteer leave per employee each year.
India's Companies Act, 2013 made CSR spending mandatory for companies above certain size thresholds, requiring them to spend at least 2 percent of average net profits from the previous three years. The term has partly given way to ESG and "sustainability" in investor-facing contexts. In customer service, CSR instead means customer service representative.
2. Customer service representative
Business & Finance · Job Title Abbreviations
Frontline employee who handles customer inquiries, complaints, orders and account changes by phone, email, chat or in person. CSRs work in call centers, banks, utilities, retailers and insurance companies.
Example: Hold times dropped after the utility added 40 CSRs for the winter billing season.
Performance is usually measured with metrics such as average handle time, first-contact resolution and customer satisfaction scores. In corporate strategy, CSR means corporate social responsibility, a completely different meaning; a call-center versus sustainability-report context makes it clear.
3. Central serous retinopathy
Medical · Ophthalmology & ENT Abbreviations
Condition in which fluid collects under the central retina, causing blurred or distorted vision, typically in one eye of a young or middle-aged man. Many cases resolve on their own within a few months.
Example: CSR OS with serous detachment on OCT; stop topical steroid cream, recheck in 6 weeks.
Also written CSC or CSCR (central serous chorioretinopathy). Corticosteroids from any route, including creams, inhalers and nasal sprays, are a strong risk factor, as are stress and pregnancy. Persistent cases may be treated with half-dose photodynamic therapy. In pulmonology CSR means Cheyne-Stokes respiration.
4. Cheyne-Stokes respiration
Medical · Respiratory Abbreviations
Breathing pattern of gradually increasing then decreasing depth (crescendo-decrescendo), alternating with pauses (central apneas), typically in cycles of about a minute. It occurs most often in heart failure and after stroke, and can be seen in healthy people at high altitude.
Example: Overnight observation shows CSR with 20-second apneas; echo shows EF 25%.
Named for Scottish physician John Cheyne (1818) and Irish physician William Stokes (1854). The pattern reflects unstable breathing control, often due to a delayed circulation time and heightened sensitivity to carbon dioxide. Its presence in heart failure is associated with worse prognosis. Biot breathing, by contrast, is irregular without the smooth crescendo pattern.
5. Cost-sharing reduction
Medical · Health Insurance Abbreviations
Extra savings on deductibles, copays and out-of-pocket maximums for lower-income people who enroll in a silver plan on an ACA marketplace, generally those with incomes from 100 to 250 percent of the federal poverty level. The reductions raise the plan's actuarial value to 73, 87 or 94 percent.
Example: CSR silver 94 plan: $0 deductible and a $10 primary care copay.
Only silver plans carry CSR variants, so eligible people forfeit these savings by choosing bronze or gold. After federal CSR payments to insurers stopped in 2017, many insurers raised silver premiums instead ("silver loading"), which increased premium tax credits. In business CSR means corporate social responsibility.
6. Cost-sharing reductions
Government & Politics · Public Program Abbreviations
ACA subsidies that lower deductibles, copayments and out-of-pocket maximums for marketplace enrollees with incomes between 100 and 250 percent of the poverty level who choose a silver-level plan.
Example: Because of CSR, his silver plan's deductible dropped from $5,000 to $800.
In 2017 the federal government stopped reimbursing insurers for these reductions, so insurers raised silver plan premiums instead, a practice called "silver loading" that increased premium tax credits. In corporate usage, CSR usually means corporate social responsibility, an unrelated term.
7. Client-side rendering
Technology & Computing · Internet & Web Abbreviations
Building a page's content in the browser with JavaScript after downloading a minimal HTML shell and the app's code. Classic single-page apps created with React, Vue or Angular default to CSR.
Example: The blog was pure CSR, so crawlers saw an empty div until we added prerendering.
CSR moves work from the server to the user's device, which can make first loads slow on low-end phones but simplifies hosting, since the app can be served as static files. In security, CSR means certificate signing request, and in business, corporate social responsibility; mentions of rendering, React or hydration point to the front-end meaning.
8. Certificate signing request
Technology & Computing · Cybersecurity Abbreviations
A file generated alongside a new private key and sent to a certificate authority to apply for a certificate. It contains the public key and identifying details such as the domain name and organization, signed with the private key.
Example: Generate the CSR on the web server with OpenSSL and paste it into the CA's order form.
The format comes from the PKCS #10 standard (RFC 2986). The private key never leaves the server; only the request is sent. Tools such as Certbot create and submit CSRs automatically. In front-end development CSR means client-side rendering, and in business corporate social responsibility.
