DMAIC stands for Define, measure, analyze, improve, control, a management & strategy abbreviation.
Five-phase, data-driven improvement cycle at the heart of Six Sigma projects: define the problem and goals, measure current performance, analyze root causes, improve the process and control it to sustain the gains. Each phase ends with a review often called a tollgate.
Example: Our DMAIC project on billing errors is now in the analyze phase, with three suspected root causes.
Usage notes
Pronounced "duh-may-ick." DMAIC improves existing processes, while DMADV (define, measure, analyze, design, verify) is used to design new ones. Six Sigma itself was developed at Motorola in the 1980s and popularized by General Electric under Jack Welch in the 1990s.
