CategoriesBusiness & Finance

EGM stands for Extraordinary general meeting, a management & strategy abbreviation.

Shareholder meeting called between annual general meetings to deal with urgent or special business, such as approving a merger, changing the articles of association or removing a director. Directors usually call it, though shareholders holding a set percentage of shares can require one.

Example: The board has called an EGM for 9 July to approve the all-share takeover by its larger rival.

Usage notes

Common in UK, European and Commonwealth corporate usage; in the US the equivalent is a "special meeting of shareholders." The UK Companies Act 2006 dropped the term, referring simply to "general meetings," but EGM persists in everyday practice. Notice periods are usually shorter than for an AGM: 14 days rather than 21 for UK companies.
