1. Explanation of benefits
Medical · Health Insurance Abbreviations
Statement sent by a health insurer after a claim is processed, showing the service, the amount billed, the plan's allowed amount, what the plan paid and what the patient may owe. It is not a bill; the provider sends a separate bill for the patient's share.
Example: EOB says the allowed amount was $180 and I owe $36 coinsurance.
Many EOBs carry the words "THIS IS NOT A BILL" for that reason. Comparing the EOB with the provider's bill helps catch errors, duplicate charges and billing for services never received. Denied claims include a reason code and instructions for appealing. Original Medicare's version is called the Medicare Summary Notice.
2. End of business
Business & Finance · Management & Strategy Abbreviations · also used in general use
Synonym for close of business, meaning the end of the working day, typically around 5 p.m. local time. It shows up mainly in email and chat deadlines in North American offices.
Example: I'll have the updated forecast to you by EOB today.
EOB is less common than EOD or COB in office writing. In US health insurance, EOB much more often means "explanation of benefits," the statement an insurer sends after processing a claim, so readers outside an office context may assume that meaning instead.
3. Edge of bed
Medical · Rehabilitation Abbreviations
Sitting position at the side of the bed with feet on the floor, often the first step in mobilizing patients after surgery or critical illness. Therapy notes record tolerance and balance while sitting EOB.
Example: Sat EOB 10 min with SBA, good static sitting balance, no dizziness.
Sitting EOB is used to check for orthostatic symptoms before standing. Early mobility protocols in ICUs often progress from EOB to standing and walking. In insurance EOB means explanation of benefits.
