1. Earned run average
Sports · Baseball Abbreviations
Pitching statistic measuring earned runs allowed per nine innings: earned runs times nine, divided by innings pitched. An ERA under 3.00 is excellent, and the league average is usually around 4.00.
Example: The left-hander lowered his ERA to 2.41 with seven scoreless innings.
Adopted officially by the National League in 1912 and the American League in 1913. Bob Gibson's 1.12 ERA in 1968, the "Year of the Pitcher", led MLB to lower the mound the following season. Earned runs exclude those caused by errors or passed balls. Analysts supplement ERA with FIP because it depends partly on defense and luck.
2. Electronic remittance advice
Medical · Health Insurance Abbreviations
Electronic explanation of payment that insurers send to providers, detailing how each claim was paid, adjusted or denied, in the standard HIPAA X12 835 transaction. Practices post payments automatically from ERAs.
Example: ERA shows CO-45 adjustments on every line; payment posted automatically.
Adjustments are explained with standard claim adjustment reason codes (CARCs) and remittance advice remark codes (RARCs), such as CO-45 for charges exceeding the fee schedule. The paper equivalent is a remittance advice or provider explanation of benefits. Claims themselves travel as X12 837 transactions.
3. Endothelin receptor antagonist
Medical · Drug Class Abbreviations
Oral drugs for pulmonary arterial hypertension, bosentan, ambrisentan and macitentan, that block endothelin-1, a powerful vessel-constricting peptide. They are often combined with PDE5 inhibitors.
Example: PAH WHO group 1: start ERA ambrisentan 5 mg plus tadalafil 40 mg daily.
ERAs cause serious birth defects, so pregnancy testing and reliable contraception are required, and the drugs have been distributed under FDA REMS programs. Bosentan can injure the liver and requires regular liver tests. In baseball ERA means earned run average.
