CategoriesMedical

HIPAA stands for Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, a health insurance abbreviation also used in government.

US law of 1996 that protects health coverage when people change jobs, standardizes electronic health care transactions and codes, and, through its Privacy and Security Rules, sets national standards for protecting health information held by health plans, providers and their business associates.

Example: Under HIPAA, the clinic needed her written authorization to share records with her employer.

Usage notes

Commonly misspelled "HIPPA". The Privacy Rule took effect in 2003 and the Security Rule in 2005, and the HITECH Act of 2009 strengthened enforcement and breach notification. HIPAA applies to covered entities and their business associates, not to most consumer apps, employers acting outside their health plans or people discussing their own health. It also gives patients a right to obtain copies of their records.
