CategoriesMedical

GFE stands for Good faith estimate, a health insurance abbreviation also used in business.

Written estimate of expected charges that US providers must give uninsured and self-pay patients before scheduled care, or on request, under the No Surprises Act. If the final bill exceeds the estimate by US$400 or more, the patient can start a federal patient-provider dispute resolution process.

Example: GFE for the colonoscopy: facility, anesthesia and pathology total $2,850.

Usage notes

For services scheduled at least three business days ahead, the estimate must arrive within one business day of scheduling. Therapists and other mental health practices must provide GFEs to self-pay clients too. Patients should keep a copy to compare with the final bill.
