HCPCS stands for Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System, a health insurance abbreviation.

Two-level US coding system for billing: Level I is the AMA's CPT code set, and Level II consists of alphanumeric codes (a letter followed by four digits) for products, supplies and services not in CPT, such as ambulance rides, durable medical equipment, prosthetics and many injectable drugs (J codes). CMS maintains Level II.

Example: Bill HCPCS J1100 for the dexamethasone injection along with the administration code.

Usage notes

Pronounced "HICK-picks". Level II codes are updated quarterly. Two-character modifiers such as -25 or -LT refine the meaning of both CPT and HCPCS codes. Locally created Level III codes were eliminated under HIPAA transaction standards.
