1. Health reimbursement arrangement
Medical · Health Insurance Abbreviations
Employer-funded account that reimburses employees tax-free for qualified medical expenses and, in some designs, insurance premiums. Only employers can contribute, and the employer decides which expenses qualify and whether unused funds roll over.
Example: Our HRA pays the first $2,000 of the deductible; after that, coinsurance applies.
Also called a health reimbursement account. Types include integrated HRAs paired with group plans, individual coverage HRAs (ICHRAs) and small-business QSEHRAs. Unlike an HSA, the balance usually stays with the employer when the employee leaves. In wellness programs HRA instead means health risk assessment.
2. Health risk assessment
Medical · Health Insurance Abbreviations
Questionnaire about health history, lifestyle and risk factors used by employer wellness programs, health plans and Medicare to identify health risks and guide prevention. It often unlocks wellness incentives and is a required part of the Medicare Annual Wellness Visit.
Example: Complete the online HRA by March 1 to earn the $300 wellness credit.
Also called a health risk appraisal. Employer wellness programs that ask health questions must follow federal laws on disability and genetic information, which limit incentives and protect privacy. Medicare Advantage plans use HRAs to plan care for new members. In benefits administration HRA means health reimbursement arrangement.
