ICD-10-CM stands for ICD-10 Clinical Modification, a health insurance abbreviation.
US version of ICD-10 used to code diagnoses in all health care settings, maintained by the CDC's National Center for Health Statistics. Codes have three to seven characters, and the set contains more than 70,000 codes capturing detail such as laterality, encounter type and complications.
Example: ICD-10-CM S52.521A: torus fracture of the lower end of the right radius, initial encounter.
Usage notes
The seventh character often indicates the encounter, such as A for initial, D for subsequent and S for sequela. The level of detail spawned jokes about codes such as W59.22 for being struck by a turtle. Diagnosis coding drives medical necessity decisions, risk adjustment and quality reporting.
