1. Independent medical examination
Law & Legal · Litigation Abbreviations · also used in medicine
Examination of a claimant by a physician chosen by the opposing party or insurer to evaluate injuries, causation, disability or need for treatment. It is common in personal injury, workers' compensation and disability insurance claims.
Example: Defense counsel scheduled the plaintiff's IME with an orthopedic surgeon for next month.
In federal court, Rule 35 allows an examination only when a party's physical or mental condition is in controversy and good cause is shown. Plaintiffs' lawyers argue that "independent" is a misnomer because the defense selects and pays the doctor, and some courts say defense medical examination (DME) instead.
2. Input method editor
Technology & Computing · Computer Abbreviations
Software component that lets people type characters not printed on their keyboard, especially Chinese, Japanese and Korean, by converting phonetic or stroke input into the intended characters. It also drives emoji pickers and handwriting input.
Example: Switch the IME to Japanese, type "arigatou" and press space to convert it to kanji.
Windows calls it an IME, macOS uses the term "input source", and phones build it into the keyboard app. Typing Chinese with pinyin produces a list of candidate characters to choose from, ranked by context. Third-party IMEs such as Sogou Pinyin and Google Japanese Input are popular, though cloud-based suggestion features have raised privacy concerns.
