1. International Criminal Court

Organizations & Companies · International Organization Abbreviations · also used in law

Permanent court in The Hague that tries individuals for genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes and the crime of aggression when national courts are unwilling or unable to prosecute. About 125 countries are parties to its founding treaty.

Example: The ICC issued an arrest warrant for the former militia commander.

The Rome Statute was adopted in 1998 and entered into force on July 1, 2002. The United States, China, Russia and India are not members. The court depends on member states to arrest suspects, and its warrants against sitting leaders have caused diplomatic disputes. It is separate from the ICJ, which hears cases between states.

2. International Chamber of Commerce

Organizations & Companies · International Organization Abbreviations · also used in law

World business organization, founded in 1919 and based in Paris, that writes the Incoterms rules used in international sales contracts and runs one of the leading international arbitration institutions.

Example: The contract specifies delivery under ICC Incoterms 2020 and arbitration in Paris.

Its International Court of Arbitration, founded in 1923, administers thousands of commercial disputes and is not a court of law but an arbitral body. Incoterms such as FOB and CIF define who pays for shipping and bears risk. In 2016 it received observer status at the UN General Assembly.

3. International Cricket Council

Sports · Sports Governing Body Abbreviations

Cricket's global governing body, with 12 full members that play Test matches and more than 90 associate members. It organizes the men's and women's Cricket World Cups, the T20 World Cup, the Champions Trophy and the World Test Championship, and enforces anti-corruption rules.

Example: The ICC reported the bowler's action and ordered an independent biomechanical test.

Founded in 1909 as the Imperial Cricket Conference by England, Australia and South Africa; it became the International Cricket Conference in 1965 and the International Cricket Council in 1989. Its headquarters moved from Lord's in London to Dubai in 2005. Outside cricket, ICC usually means the International Criminal Court.

4. Intraclass correlation coefficient

Units & Measurements · Statistics Abbreviations

A measure of reliability or agreement for measurements made by different raters or within groups, from 0 (no agreement) to 1 (perfect). In multilevel studies it describes how similar members of the same cluster are.

Example: Inter-rater reliability was excellent, ICC = 0.91.

Shrout and Fleiss described six common forms in 1979, and choosing the wrong one changes the result. Widely cited guidelines by Koo and Li (2016) treat values above 0.75 as good and above 0.9 as excellent. In cluster-randomized trials, the ICC determines how much the sample size must be inflated.

5. Interstate Commerce Commission

Government & Politics · US Federal Agency Abbreviations

First independent federal regulatory commission, which regulated railroads and later trucking, buses and pipelines, setting rates and enforcing nondiscrimination from 1887 until it was abolished in 1995. Its remaining functions passed largely to the Surface Transportation Board.

Example: Older railroad tariffs and trucking permits often cite ICC docket numbers.

The Interstate Commerce Act of 1887 created it in response to farmers' complaints about railroad rate abuses. Deregulation laws of 1980, the Staggers Rail Act and the Motor Carrier Act, removed most of its powers. In 1961 it ordered desegregation of interstate bus terminals after the Freedom Rides. Today ICC usually means the International Criminal Court.
