1. Iron deficiency anemia
Medical · Hematology and Oncology Abbreviations
Most common type of anemia worldwide, caused by insufficient iron for hemoglobin production, producing small, pale red cells and low ferritin. Common causes are menstrual or gastrointestinal blood loss, pregnancy, poor intake and malabsorption such as celiac disease.
Example: Hgb 8.9, MCV 68, ferritin 4: IDA; colonoscopy and EGD ordered given age 62.
A ferritin below about 30 ng/mL strongly supports iron deficiency, though inflammation can raise ferritin and mask it. In men and postmenopausal women, unexplained IDA calls for gastrointestinal evaluation to exclude cancer. Oral iron given on alternate days may be absorbed better than daily dosing, and intravenous iron is used when oral iron fails or is not tolerated. Craving ice (pagophagia) is a classic clue.
2. International Development Association
Organizations & Companies · International Organization Abbreviations
World Bank arm that provides grants and very low-interest, long-term loans to the world's poorest countries, financed by donor contributions replenished every three years.
Example: Ethiopia's health program is supported by IDA grants.
Created in 1960 to complement the IBRD, it is one of the largest sources of aid for the poorest countries. Donors agreed a replenishment of about 100 billion dollars, known as IDA21, in December 2024. Countries graduate from IDA when their incomes rise above a threshold.
