ITP stands for Immune thrombocytopenia, a hematology and oncology abbreviation.

Autoimmune disorder in which antibodies destroy platelets and impair their production, causing a platelet count below 100,000 per microliter with bruising, pinpoint skin bleeding (petechiae) or, rarely, serious bleeding. In children it often follows a viral infection and resolves on its own.

Example: Platelets 9,000 with wet purpura in the mouth: ITP, dexamethasone 40 mg and IVIG.

Usage notes

Formerly called idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura; an international working group renamed it in 2009 because many patients do not have purpura. Treatment is usually reserved for bleeding or counts below about 30,000. Options include corticosteroids, IVIG, thrombopoietin receptor agonists such as eltrombopag and romiplostim, rituximab and splenectomy. ITP is a diagnosis of exclusion.
