IFAB stands for International Football Association Board, a sports governing body abbreviation.
Body that writes and amends soccer's Laws of the Game worldwide, approving changes such as VAR in 2018 and permanent concussion substitutes. Its annual general meeting decides which law changes apply from the following season.
Example: IFAB approved a trial in which only the captain may approach the referee.
Usage notes
Founded in 1886 by the football associations of England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland. FIFA joined in 1913 and holds four votes, while each British association holds one; changes need six of the eight votes, so neither FIFA nor the British associations can act alone. Pronounced "EYE-fab".
