ICD-11 stands for International Classification of Diseases, Eleventh Revision, a health insurance abbreviation.
Latest WHO revision of the disease classification, adopted by the World Health Assembly in 2019 and in effect for international reporting since January 1, 2022. It is fully digital, with codes designed for electronic records, and adds new chapters such as conditions related to sexual health and traditional medicine.
Example: Several countries are piloting ICD-11 coding for mortality statistics.
Usage notes
ICD-11 introduced gaming disorder, described burnout as an occupational phenomenon and moved gender incongruence out of the mental disorders chapter. Countries adopt it on their own timelines; the United States still uses ICD-10-CM. Codes combine stem codes with optional extension codes for added detail.
