1. Income-driven repayment

Business & Finance · Personal Finance Abbreviations · also used in government and education

Family of US federal student loan repayment plans that set monthly payments as a share of discretionary income, with any balance left after 20 to 25 years forgiven. Payments are recalculated each year from income and family size and can be as low as zero.

Example: After the layoff I recertified my income, and my IDR payment dropped to $0.

The category has included Income-Based Repayment (IBR), Pay As You Earn (PAYE), Income-Contingent Repayment (ICR) and the SAVE plan, which federal courts blocked in 2024 and which was later eliminated. Legislation enacted in 2025 created a new Repayment Assistance Plan (RAP), available from July 1, 2026, and set PAYE and ICR to close, so borrowers should check current options at StudentAid.gov. The federal tax exclusion for forgiven balances expired at the end of 2025.

2. Indonesian rupiah

Business & Finance · Currency Abbreviations

Indonesia's currency, issued by Bank Indonesia. Its low unit value means everyday prices run into thousands, and the largest banknote is Rp100,000.

Example: The Bali villa costs IDR 2,500,000 per night.

The name derives from the Indian rupee. Amounts are written Rp with a dot as the thousands separator, as in Rp15.000. Plans to redenominate the currency by removing three zeros have been discussed for years without being carried out. The sen subunit is obsolete.

3. Independent dispute resolution

Medical · Health Insurance Abbreviations

Federal arbitration process under the No Surprises Act for settling payment disputes between out-of-network providers and health plans after open negotiation fails. A certified entity chooses one of the two final offers, a format known as baseball-style arbitration.

Example: Provider group filed 300 IDR cases after payer offers came in below its costs.

Case volume far exceeded government projections after launch, and providers have won most disputes. Lawsuits by the Texas Medical Association led courts to strike down parts of the original rules on how arbitrators weigh the qualifying payment amount. Patients are not parties to IDR.
