1. Indian rupee

Business & Finance · Currency Abbreviations

India's currency, issued by the Reserve Bank of India and divided into 100 paise. It is written with the ₹ symbol, adopted in 2010, and large amounts are grouped in lakhs (100,000) and crores (10 million).

Example: The ticket costs INR 1,250, including convenience fees.

The ₹ symbol, designed by D. Udaya Kumar, blends the Devanagari letter ra with the Latin R. In November 2016 the government demonetized the old 500- and 1,000-rupee notes, and the 2,000-rupee note issued then was withdrawn from circulation in 2023. The UPI mobile payment system now handles billions of transactions a month. Nepal and Bhutan accept the rupee widely.

2. International normalized ratio

Medical · Laboratory Test Abbreviations

Standardized form of the prothrombin time, calculated so results are comparable between laboratories regardless of reagent. A person not taking anticoagulants has an INR near 1.0; most patients on warfarin target 2.0 to 3.0, and some with mechanical mitral valves target 2.5 to 3.5.

Example: INR 4.6 today: hold warfarin tonight and recheck Thursday.

Adopted through the World Health Organization in 1983, the INR equals the patient's PT divided by the mean normal PT, raised to the power of the reagent's International Sensitivity Index (ISI). It was designed for warfarin and does not reliably measure the effect of direct oral anticoagulants such as apixaban or rivaroxaban. It is also a component of the MELD score for liver disease severity.
