1. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services

Medical · Health Insurance Abbreviations · also used in government

Federal agency within the US Department of Health and Human Services that runs Medicare, works with states on Medicaid and CHIP, oversees the federal health insurance marketplace and sets many quality and billing standards. Its payment rules shape how hospitals and clinicians nationwide are paid.

Example: CMS finalized next year's physician fee schedule in November.

Known as the Health Care Financing Administration (HCFA) until 2001. CMS also administers CLIA laboratory certification and the Open Payments database of industry payments to physicians, and its Innovation Center tests new payment models. In technology CMS means content management system.

2. Circulation, motion, sensation

Medical · Patient Assessment Abbreviations

Neurovascular check of a limb, often after fractures, casting, splinting or orthopedic surgery, assessing color, warmth, pulses and capillary refill, the ability to move fingers or toes, and normal feeling. Changes may signal swelling or compartment syndrome.

Example: CMS checks q1h x 24 hrs to RLE; toes pink, warm, wiggles, sensation intact.

Also written CSM, or expanded into the "5 Ps": pain, pallor, pulselessness, paresthesia and paralysis. Pain out of proportion to the injury, especially with passive stretch, is the earliest warning of compartment syndrome. In US health policy the same letters mean the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.

3. Content management system

Technology & Computing · Internet & Web Abbreviations

Software that lets people create, edit and publish website content through an admin interface without writing code. WordPress, Drupal, Joomla and headless platforms such as Contentful are examples.

Example: Marketing can update the pricing page in the CMS without waiting for a developer.

WordPress, launched in 2003, runs more than 40 percent of all websites according to W3Techs surveys in the 2020s. A "headless" CMS stores content and delivers it through an API, leaving the front end to a separate framework. In health care, CMS means the US Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, an unrelated meaning.

4. Compact Muon Solenoid

Science & Engineering · Physics Abbreviations

General-purpose particle detector at the Large Hadron Collider that, together with ATLAS, discovered the Higgs boson in 2012. Built around a huge superconducting solenoid magnet, CMS weighs about 14,000 tonnes, making it heavier, though smaller, than ATLAS.

Example: CMS recorded collision data at rates of up to a billion interactions per second.

"Compact" is relative: the detector is 21 meters long and 15 meters high. Unusually, it was built in sections at the surface and lowered into its cavern. Its solenoid produces a field of about 3.8 tesla, roughly 100,000 times Earth's magnetic field. In software CMS means content management system.
