ATLAS stands for A Toroidal LHC ApparatuS, a physics abbreviation.
One of the two general-purpose particle detectors at CERN's Large Hadron Collider, 46 meters long and 25 meters high, the largest by volume ever built for a collider. ATLAS and CMS jointly announced the discovery of the Higgs boson in 2012.
Example: The ATLAS collaboration includes more than 5,000 members from about 40 countries.
Usage notes
The awkward capitalization makes the acronym spell the name of the Titan who held up the sky. ATLAS's huge toroidal magnets bend the paths of muons to measure their momentum. The detector weighs about 7,000 tonnes and sits in a cavern 100 meters underground.
