CategoriesGovernment & Politics

CHIP stands for Children's Health Insurance Program, a public program abbreviation also used in medicine.

Joint federal-state program that provides low-cost health coverage to children, and in some states pregnant women, in families that earn too much to qualify for Medicaid but cannot afford private insurance. It covers several million children.

Example: Their two kids are enrolled in CHIP, which charges a small monthly premium.

Usage notes

The Balanced Budget Act of 1997 launched it as SCHIP, the State Children's Health Insurance Program, and it was renamed when reauthorized in 2009. States can run it as an expansion of Medicaid, a separate program or a combination. The federal government pays a higher matching rate for CHIP than for regular Medicaid.
