1. Area median income
Government & Politics · Public Program Abbreviations
Midpoint of household incomes in a metro area or county, published annually by HUD and adjusted for household size, that determines eligibility for affordable housing programs. Limits are expressed as percentages, such as 30, 50 or 80 percent of AMI.
Example: The new apartments are reserved for households earning up to 60 percent of AMI.
HUD's income categories are extremely low income (30 percent of AMI), very low income (50 percent) and low income (80 percent). Because AMI is calculated for whole regions, affordable rents in expensive metros can be out of reach for local low-wage workers. In medicine AMI means acute myocardial infarction.
2. Acute myocardial infarction
Medical · Cardiology Abbreviations
Heart attack in its acute phase, the first days after onset when arrhythmias, heart failure and mechanical complications are most likely. US hospitals report AMI outcomes, such as 30-day mortality and readmission, to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services as public quality measures.
Example: The hospital's 30-day AMI mortality rate fell after it joined a regional STEMI network.
Clinically, AMI is subdivided into STEMI and NSTEMI because the urgency of treatment differs. ICD-10 codes an infarction under I21 for four weeks after onset; after that, it is coded as old MI (I25.2). Mechanical complications such as papillary muscle rupture and ventricular septal rupture typically appear three to five days after a large infarct.
3. Advanced metering infrastructure
Science & Engineering · Energy Abbreviations
System of smart meters, communication networks and data management that lets utilities read electricity, gas or water use remotely at frequent intervals and communicate with customers' devices. AMI enables time-of-use pricing, outage detection and detailed usage data.
Example: After the AMI rollout, customers could see their hourly electricity use in the utility's app.
Most US electricity meters are now smart meters. Concerns raised during rollouts included privacy, cybersecurity and claims about radio-frequency health effects, which reviews have not supported. In medicine AMI means acute myocardial infarction.
4. Amazon Machine Image
Technology & Computing · Cloud Computing Abbreviations
A template containing the operating system, software and configuration used to launch EC2 instances. AWS, software vendors and customers publish AMIs, and teams build their own "golden images" for consistent servers.
Example: Bake the hardened OS and agents into an AMI so every new instance starts compliant.
Images are specific to a region and can be copied between regions. Tools such as HashiCorp Packer automate building them. Unverified community images are a security risk because they may contain malware or leftover credentials.
