EC2 stands for Elastic Compute Cloud, a cloud computing abbreviation.
The core AWS service for renting virtual servers, called instances, billed by the second or hour, in sizes from tiny burstable machines to GPU servers for AI training.
Example: Spin up an EC2 instance in the Frankfurt region for the load test, then terminate it.
Usage notes
Launched in beta in August 2006. Instance types are named by family and size, such as m7g.large, where the g marks AWS's Arm-based Graviton chips. Pricing options include on-demand, reserved instances, savings plans and discounted spot instances that can be reclaimed at short notice. The 2 refers to the two Cs in Compute Cloud.
