DBaaS stands for Database as a service, a cloud computing abbreviation.
A managed cloud offering that runs databases for customers, handling provisioning, backups, patching, replication and scaling. Amazon RDS, Azure SQL Database, Google Cloud SQL, MongoDB Atlas and Snowflake are examples.
Example: Moving to a DBaaS removed our weekend patching windows and automated point-in-time backups.
Usage notes
Customers still design schemas, write queries and control access, but give up some tuning options and operating-system access. Serverless databases bill by usage and scale automatically. Lock-in and data egress fees are common concerns when choosing a provider.
