DevOps stands for Development and operations, a cloud computing abbreviation.

A culture and set of practices that bring software development and IT operations together, using automation, continuous integration and delivery, monitoring and shared ownership to release software quickly and reliably.

Example: After the DevOps transformation, the team went from quarterly releases to several deploys a day.

Usage notes

Patrick Debois organized the first DevOpsDays in Ghent, Belgium, in 2009, popularizing the term. The DORA research program measures performance with four key metrics, including deployment frequency and lead time for changes. "DevOps engineer" became a common job title, though many practitioners argue DevOps is a culture rather than a role.
