CategoriesTechnology & Computing

EBS stands for Elastic Block Store, a cloud computing abbreviation.

Persistent block storage for EC2 instances, providing virtual disks called volumes that survive instance restarts and can be backed up with snapshots.

Example: Increase the EBS volume to 500 GB and switch it to gp3 for better baseline throughput.

Usage notes

Launched in 2008. Volume types range from general-purpose SSD (gp2, gp3) to provisioned-IOPS SSD and cheaper hard-disk options. Each volume lives in one availability zone, so snapshots stored in S3 are used for backups and for moving data. Comparable services include Azure Managed Disks and Google Persistent Disk.
