FaaS stands for Function as a service, a cloud computing abbreviation.
A serverless cloud model in which developers upload individual functions that run only when triggered by events, such as an HTTP request or a file upload, and are billed per execution rather than for idle servers. AWS Lambda, Azure Functions and Google Cloud Functions are examples.
Example: The thumbnail generator is a FaaS function that runs each time an image lands in the bucket.
Usage notes
AWS Lambda, launched in 2014, popularized the model. Functions scale to zero when unused but can suffer "cold start" delays, and providers cap execution time. "Serverless" is the broader label for FaaS plus other managed services where servers are hidden from the customer.
