1. Respiratory distress syndrome

Breathing disorder of premature newborns caused by insufficient surfactant, the substance that keeps air sacs open, leading to collapsed alveoli, grunting, retractions and low oxygen soon after birth. Risk rises the earlier a baby is born.

Example: Born at 28 weeks with grunting and ground-glass lungs on x-ray: RDS, surfactant given via ETT.

Formerly called hyaline membrane disease, which caused the 1963 death of President John F. Kennedy's newborn son Patrick. Antenatal corticosteroids given to mothers at risk of preterm delivery, shown effective by Liggins and Howie in 1972, speed lung maturation, and surfactant replacement therapy became available in 1990. Early CPAP is now used to avoid intubation in many infants.

2. Relational Database Service

Runs relational databases, including MySQL, PostgreSQL, MariaDB, Oracle and SQL Server, as a managed AWS service that handles backups, patching, replication and failover.

Example: Enable Multi-AZ on the RDS instance so it fails over automatically if a zone goes down.

Launched in 2009 with MySQL support. Amazon Aurora, a cloud-native engine compatible with MySQL and PostgreSQL, is offered alongside it. Customers cannot log in to the underlying server, which limits some tuning. Read replicas take reporting queries off the primary database.
