1. Other comprehensive income

Business & Finance · Accounting Abbreviations

Gains and losses that bypass net income and are recorded directly in equity, such as foreign currency translation adjustments, certain pension remeasurements, unrealized gains on some debt securities and cash flow hedges. Net income plus OCI equals comprehensive income.

Example: A stronger dollar produced a $90 million translation loss in OCI this quarter.

Accumulated OCI (AOCI) is reported as a separate component of shareholders' equity. US GAAP later "recycles" most OCI items into net income when they are realized, while IFRS prohibits recycling for certain items, such as revaluation surpluses. Investors may overlook OCI because headline earnings exclude it.

2. On-campus interviewing

Law & Legal · Legal Profession Abbreviations

Recruiting program in which law firms and other employers interview law students, traditionally rising second-years, through their school's career office, leading to callback interviews and summer associate offers. It has long been the main route into large law firms.

Example: I bid on 40 firms for OCI and got 12 screening interviews.

Students "bid" for interview slots through the school's system. Since about 2021 many large firms recruit well before formal OCI, often in the spring or early summer after the first year, pushing schools to move their programs earlier. Callback interviews at the firm's offices usually follow within weeks.

3. Open Container Initiative

Technology & Computing · Cloud Computing Abbreviations

A Linux Foundation project that maintains open standards for container image formats, runtimes and distribution, so images built with Docker or other tools run on any compliant runtime.

Example: Push the image to any OCI-compliant registry; Kubernetes doesn't care which tool built it.

Founded in 2015 by Docker, CoreOS and other companies, with Docker donating its image format and the runc runtime. The OCI Image, Runtime and Distribution specifications underpin Docker, containerd, Podman and cloud registries. In cloud computing OCI usually refers to Oracle Cloud Infrastructure; container images and runtimes point to this meaning.

4. Oracle Cloud Infrastructure

Technology & Computing · Cloud Computing Abbreviations

Oracle's public cloud platform, offering compute, storage, networking and Oracle's databases as managed services, and known for running Oracle Database and Exadata workloads in the cloud.

Example: We moved the ERP's Oracle databases to OCI to cut licensing costs.

Launched as Oracle's second-generation cloud around 2016, it grew quickly with large AI computing contracts in the 2020s. In container technology OCI means the Open Container Initiative; mentions of Oracle, regions and tenancies point to the cloud platform.
